India's COVID-19 Emergency

In the beginning of quarantine, other countries looked to India as an example of how to handle Covid-19, however now, they look to us as a warning, as a book full of mistakes that they should never make.
So how did India plummet downhill so fast?
The ‘second wave’ of the virus hit India like a wrecking ball, taking thousands of lives with it. The country rapidly lost its foothold against the virus, and it’s been a steady decline since then. Instead of preserving vaccines for their own country, like other presidents have done, the Indian government chose to export supplies, and very soon, ran out themselves, thus leaving their own people unvaccinated. Covid relief equipment like Ventilators and oxygen cylinders were scarce, as were hospital beds. Despite India’s excellent history with the subject, no amount of bribing can get you these basic covid needs, simply because there aren't any! Furthermore, our country has only vaccinated 2% of it’s mammoth population, and the plan they had soon fell apart, whether it be opening vaccines for everyone above 18, to switching around rules like a chameleon, India has created mass confusion within the vaccine industry.
Unlike the first wave of the virus, which was dangerous, but not lethal, the second wave is intent on taking lives. The death toll is shooting up like a rocket, and unlike in space, I don't think we have a return ticket for anytime soon. Just on Friday, 7th May, India reported 4092 deaths in only 24 hours, the third country after the US and Brazil to report more than 4000 a day. Clearly, not a record we wanted to achieve.
One would assume that our country plagued by this virus would cause the government to step up, Right? Wrong. Our government is only concerned with its own selfish needs. Despite the fact that it's been predicted that we’ll have a staggering amount of 1 million deaths by August first, the Prime Minister is doing nothing to reduce this number, if anything, he’s making it worse. Despite warnings about the risks of superspreader events, the government allowed religious festivals to go ahead, drawing millions of people from around the country, along with huge political rallies — conspicuous for their lack of COVID-19 mitigation measures.
In conclusion, India is dying, and despite all the awareness raised, this virus continues to brutally wipe out our population.
